Medieval Great Houses of the East Midlands - A talk by Dr James Wright.
The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries ushered in a new type of high-status residence in the east midlands – the late mediaeval great house. Previous scholars were somewhat obsessed with the semi-fortified nature of these properties. However, modern research has demonstrated that they were multi-functional and highly complex structures which offered opportunities for socially rising elites to show off their status in society.
This talk is based on recent fieldwork and research at sites including Haddon Hall (Derbyshire), Greasley Castle (Nottinghamshire), Tattershall Castle (Lincolnshire) and Ashby Castle (Leicestershire). James has been involved with the world of archaeology for over twenty years. Following his graduation from the Department of Archaeology at the University of Nottingham, he began his career working for Trent & Peak Archaeology before retraining as a conservation stonemason. James then combined both disciplines as Archaeological and Historic Buildings Assistant at Nottinghamshire County Council between 2004-2010, where he ran the Castles of Nottinghamshire Project. All are welcome to come and listen to this fascinating talk presented by Dr James Wright.
