If you want to escape the busy city lifestyle and get away from the stress of everyday life, then fear not because within a few short miles of Nottingham you can admire hidden spots of scenic beauty, search out local tastes and delights and spot inspiring English wildlife.
Either at your own leisure, or by following an itinerary, there are some spectacular sites awaiting you.
Head out of the city centre, around 20 miles, and you will find Sherwood Forest – internationally linked to the county’s legend of Robin Hood. The Forest extends over 450 acres, and with more than 1000 veteran oaks producing a strong, woody aroma that mingles with the delicious scent of the countless number of trees. Exploring on foot is the ideal way to take in the beautiful ancient nature.
Also in north Nottinghamshire, The Dukeries is a prestigious area surrounding some of the county’s finest former Ducal estates and countryside. There is so much to explore and enjoy.
Welbeck Abbey, Thoresby Hall, Clumber House and Workshop Manor are amazing historic stately homes all housed in the Dukeries region and steeped in history. As well as the estate’s prestigious presence, there are many popular attractions to explore. The Harley Gallery houses items from the Portland Collection, the Welbeck Farm Shop sells local produce such as beer, bread and cheese and Mr Straw’s House, in Worksop, is a time capsule of a local grocer’s house from the 1920s. The beautiful Clumber Park is a glorious landscape of parkland which covers more than 3,800 acres and Creswell Crags is a world famous archaeological site, set in a limestone gorge with many caves to explore and a lake, perfect for a long walk to stretch your legs. If you'd rather explore this area on horseback, simply head to the nearby Coloured Cob Equestrian Centre and get yourself a noble steed to do the legwork instead.
Nottinghamshire also boasts numerous country parks, and picturesque nature reserves. Rufford Abbey Country Park and Attenborough Nature Reserve are amongst the many that provide a spectacular outdoor experience throughout all the seasons.
Go for a leisurely stroll, get active on a bike ride, spot wildlife in their natural habitat, kick back with a picnic with the family or absorb some scenic English countryside.
Just when you think there's notihing else to explore, take to the water on one of Nottinghamshire’s many waterways, slow down, relax, and see the world with fresh eyes. Many of the canals around Nottinghamshire were created to serve local industry. Today they create an interconnecting network of leisure waterways across the region, offering holiday makers a chance to explore the English countryside at a relaxed pace.
