You are here > Plan A Visit > Accessibility > Autism Friendly Venues
With a more thorough understanding of special needs on the rise, there are now many autism friendly events and venues around the UK, allowing those on the autistic spectrum, along with their carers and families, to enjoy and take part in regular events and attractions. Often providing early or late night openings, participating venues can allow those with autism or additional requirements to enjoy their events and attractions in a more relaxed setting. These tailored events can include a limited number of visitors, toned down lighting, and less noise to reduce over stimulation, along with chill-out spaces to relax in if things get a little overwhelming.
Autistic Nottingham is founded and run by Autistic adults without intellectual disabilities, to bridge the gap in provision for Autistic adults who often find no appropriate services for their needs. They provide social groups, post and pre-diagnostic support and run a fantastic calendar of events, welcome to all.
Some of the venues in Nottingham providing relaxed sessions include:
Theatre Royal Concert Hall provide relaxed performances and have a visual story of the buildings to make your visit easier. The Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall have been awarded The National Autistic Society’s Autism Friendly Award for 2020.
Broadway Cinema host film Supportive Environment Screenings with special care taken to make the environment supportive for children on the autism spectrum.
Nottingham Playhouse – you can find information on Nottingham Playhouse’s website about their access for people with learning disabilities.
Newstead Abbey regularly facilitate quiet or autism friendly sessions for admission or exhibitions.
Victoria Centre provides various events, services and facilities for those on the autism spectrum, including visual stories of the shopping centre, alert cards and wristbands.
The National Ice Centre offer relaxed skating sessions for those who would benefit from a more calm and quiet atmosphere – including those with a learning disability, an autism spectrum condition, or sensory and communication disorder. The music will be turned off within the venue and the Sub Zero café, and the lighting will be kept to a standard 200-lux setting, with no disco or flashing lights.
Clip 'n Climb is a National Austism Society recognised Autism Friendly Venue and welcome all visitors with different access requirements. They also hold dedicated SEN sessions once a month on a Saturday morning.
