Day 1 | Morning
Stay at the stunning, recently refurbished Southwell Holiday Cottage a two bedroom cottage located in the picturesque traditional market town of Southwell. Lavender Cottage is just a short walk through the tree lined park to the centre of town, making it ideal for walkers and cyclists alike; the many shops, restaurants, cosy cafes, friendly pubs and garden centres are all within walking distance.
After you unpack and have enjoyed some homemade breakfast at your accommodation, head on over to the Museum of Timekeeping and discover its fascinating collection of clocks, watches and timepieces. Explore amazing exhibits including some of history's most famous timekeeping devices, all based inside the gorgeous surrounds of the Grade II listed Upton Hall.
Day 1| Afternoon
Next, head to the historical town of Southwell where the first place to visit is Southwell Minster and Archbishop's Palace. This majestic cathedral is a must-stop during your visit to Southwell. Its magnificent towers stand tall over the town and is key landmark there. Wander around this grand building and admire its finest-in-the-country naturalistic carvings - the Leaves of Southwell - and take in the grandeur of its tall ceilings and stained-glass windows. There’s also a Visitor Centre just outside the minster which incorporates the Cathedral Shop, Refectory and audio-visual centre. A digitally-recorded audio guide is available. The minster is open daily from 8am to 7pm and entry is free, they do however welcome donations on the door. While you’re there stop by the Archbishop’s Palace, dating way back to 14th century. Wander around its gardens and admire this historical structure with one of its famous occupants being Cardinal Wolsey who was serving under Henry VIII, and who famously failed to secure the divorce from Catherine of Aragon. The palace is open daily 9am – 5pm, however, to avoid disappointment, please check opening times before you visit because it is sometimes closed for functions.
While you’re still inside the Southwell Minster grounds, stop by The Refectory for a spot of lunch and to recharge your batteries. We recommend securing a table on their patio area where you can take in some more of the magnificent view of Southwell Minister.
Before you head to our final recommended experience of the day, wander through Southwell’s charming streets and take in the local atmosphere. There are several shops worth a visit including Bookwise – a charity bookshop where you can stock up on the latest bestsellers and plenty of characterful old books.
The final attraction of the day is The Workhouse, which is just few minutes’ drive from Southwell’s town centre. Built in 1824, this austere building, pioneering in its design and approach, became a blueprint for similar institutions across the country. For decades, it was where the poorest in society had to work in return for food, shelter and medical care.
Today, you are invited to hear its story, told from the perspective of those who lived and worked there. A full programme of living history events, tours and exhibitions are available for you to explore. Children can enjoy special trails, games and dressing up with activities and crafts during the school holidays as well.
Day 2 | Morning
Head out bright and early and enjoy a unique golfing experience at the Southwell Golf Club renown for its welcoming and friendly atmosphere to both members and visitors alike, both on the course and in their spacious clubhouse that was first opened in 2007 where you can relax both before and after your game, enjoy the first class facilities and excellent food and drink on offer.
Day 2 | Afternoon
Less than 5 miles drive away from Southwell's town centre, you'll find White Post Farm Centre which is the next stop on your list. White Post Farm can provide a unique day out with plenty of opportunities to get up close to the animals! The farm covers around 25 acres of land, with more than 3,000 animals! These include classic farm animals such as cows, goats and pigs, as well as some more exotic animals such as llamas, wallabies and reptiles.
Day 2 | Evening
After you’re done with all of the adventures, you can have your dinner at the park or if you prefer to dine somewhere else, we recommend you check out Fox and Hounds which is just 2.7 miles away. If you’re too tired to eat out you can cook something up yourself at Southwell Holiday Cottage – the choice is yours.
