Nottinghamshire Archives is the main centre for family history research in the county, housing archives for the county of Nottinghamshire, the city of Nottingham, the diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, and other local bodies, families and individuals.
Source material includes census returns, parish registers, Bishop’s transcripts, indexes of births, marriages and deaths and probate records.
The archives held by Manuscripts and Special Collections can be consulted by appointment at the public Reading Room at the University’s King’s Meadow Campus. Please make contact in advance if you wish to visit the Reading Room and view items from the collections.
The holdings include the papers of leading Nottinghamshire families and their estates and the records of local businesses and organisations, including those of the Archdeaconry of Nottingham. There are also collections of the papers of political, diplomatic, literary, scientific and academic figures, including D.H. Lawrence.
