About

Tuesday 15th July 2025 I 7pm
Venue: Arnold Methodist Church
Tickets: £1.00 for members and £3.00 for non-members

Bromley House was constructed in 1752 for George Smith, the grandson of the founder of Smith's Bank, the oldest known provincial bank in the country. The building is listed as Grade II* and features many noteworthy period characteristics, including fine paintings and an extensive walled garden at the rear.

The primary section of the library is situated within a series of reading rooms adorned with plaster ceilings, cornices, and overmantels. A particularly distinguished spiral staircase and gallery, which were added by the library after relocating to Bromley House, are prominent features of the largest room.

Initially, library membership was obtained through the purchase of a share, with a cap set at 265 members, and it covered the entire household. In addition to literature, the library became renowned for its collections pertaining to history and science. Notably, it served as the original home of Nottingham’s Natural History Society, the site of Nottingham’s meridian line (which remains intact to this day), and the location of the first photographic studio in the Midlands in 1841. Among the early members was mathematician and physicist George Green.  All are welcome to come and listen to Martins account of this fascinating building’s incredibly rich history.
