748 reviewsA beautiful historic house set in a glorious landscape of gardens and parkland within the heart of Nottinghamshire. Founded as a monastic house in the late 12th century, Newstead was home to the poet Lord Byron between 1808 - 1814. Inside the Abbey there is much to explore including Victorian room settings, and the poets private apartments.
The gardens and parkland at Newstead Abbey cover more than 300 acres with paths that meander past lakes, ponds and waterfalls. The formal gardens are the perfect place to relax and offer something in all seasons from the bright colours of the rhododendrons in late spring to the Japanese maples in autumn.
Historic House tours take place Saturday & Sunday at 3pm. Meet one of the tour guides to explore some of the fascinating history of Newstead Abbey and find out more about its most famous resident, George Gordon Byron, and hear some of the stories of the time he spent at Newstead Abbey. Please note that tours must be booked in advance. They take place periodically throughout the year, please click here for details.
The Abbey hosts a variety of special events and temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
You can now enjoy a short stay in our very own Gardener's Cottage, in the heart of the Abbey grounds.
Accessibility:
Due to the historic nature of Newstead Abbey there is no lift access to the upper floor of the House and access to the ground floor is limited. Wheelchair users and their accompanying carers are therefore entitled to tickets priced at the concessionary rate. Some external paths and walkways have deep gravel surfaces which may make wheelchair manoeuvres difficult.
The café is accessible for wheelchair users.
