Join Nottingham Contemporary for a Wednesday Walkthrough – a gallery tour where artists, experts, researchers and academics give short talks in their field of expertise relating to the concepts explored in their exhibitions.

In Galleries 3 & 4 they are currently presenting the second-ever institutional exhibition of Algerian- German artist Hamid Zénati (b.1944, Algeria; d.2022, Germany) following his solo debut at Haus der Kunst, Munich. Celebrating Zénati's nearly sixty-year career, this major survey casts him as an inventive, free thinker and artist of his time. Zénati worked compulsively across surfaces and disciplines from textiles, fashion and ceramics to wearable sculpture and photography, using his 'all-over' signature style.

In this walkthrough, Tom Godfrey will introduce aspects of Hamid Zénatis's solo exhibition in relation to Nottingham and the region's own fashion history. Tom will explore connections between Zénati's multi-disciplinary approach and the crossovers that existed between Nottingham's style, music, visual art and bar/club cultures.

Accompanying the walkthrough will be a small presentation of archive materials that document some of this history, featuring materials related to brands including G Force, Cocky's Shed, Paul Smith and Alto, as well as present day designers.

Tom Godfrey is Director of Bonington Gallery, Nottingham Trent University's resident art gallery, first established in 1969. Tom is also Director of the independent gallery and publisher TG, established in 2014 and based at the independent arts organisation Primary. He also co-edits Version– a magazine, web and events platform that loosely explores relationships between fashion and technology.

In 2005 he co-founded the Nottingham based artist-run gallery Moot which across it's 5 year existence staged 60+ gallery and offsite exhibitions (including operating as an occasional bar and restaurant). In 2008 he co-founded the studio and fabrication facility One Thoresby Street (closing in 2022). Whilst at One Thoresby Street, Tom initiated the commissioning platform Keep Floors and Passages Clear, later shown at White Columns NYC and purchased by Arts Council Collection. He also initiated the publishing project Marbled Reams, working with 30 artists across a 4 year period.

Further to this, Tom has worked for, and curated numerous independent projects for galleries, project spaces and institutional spaces across the UK, Europe and beyond.
