Standing In This Place: A Sculpture & Heritage Project
📍 Nottingham’s Green Heart, Broadmarsh
Unveiling in January 2025, this powerful new sculpture stands in Nottingham's newly created Green Heart in the old Broadmarsh area, recognising the contributions of thousands of unamed and forgotten women women involved in the East Midlands' textile and lace industry.
Commissioned by The National Justice Museum, the life-size bronze statue represents both a white mill worker/lace maker and a Black enslaved woman uprooted to the Americas—symbolising the deep connections between Nottingham’s historic lace industry and the transatlantic slave trade.
Created by sculptor Rachel Carter in collaboration with the Legacy Makers, this three-year-long arts and heritage project engaged over 400 women through creative workshops, exhibitions, and storytelling, ensuring their voices are woven into Nottingham’s cultural landscape.
