Tuesday 19th November 2024 I 7pm
Venue: Arnold Methodist Church
Tickets: £1.00 for members and £3.00 for non-members
The Arnold Local History Group are proud to welcome Boots Head Archivist Sophie Clapp, to talk about the fascinating story that is ‘Boots of Nottingham’.
In 1849, Boots founder John Boot, opened a herbalist store in Nottingham’s Goose Gate. 2024 marks the 175th year since the opening of that first store. Today, Boots is the UK’s leading health and beauty retailer with over 2,100 stores.
John Boot’s founding mission was to make healthcare affordable for all, before the NHS came into existence. Later in the nineteenth century, Boots was at the forefront of retail concepts with new department store formats. It continues to be innovative today, with reinvented beauty halls and healthcare areas.
Boots has played an important role in British culture throughout its 175-year history, shaping how people shop and access health and beauty products and services. Boots is also responsible for introducing iconic British brands like No7. Boots has evolved from a little shop in Nottingham's Goose Gate, since its humble beginnings in 1849, to a 2,100-shops-strong brand that is the country's leading health and beauty retailer.
Many of Nottingham residents will have worked in one of these iconic stores or, had relatives that have done so. All are welcome to come along and listen to this fascinating one-off presentation by Boots head archivist Sophie Clapp.
Visitors can attend the talk at the cost of £3
If you wish to join the Arnold Local History Group you can do so also at the annual cost of £10 and entitles you to attend monthly meetings for £1, vote at the AGM and be eligible for election to the committee.
