Bach's Choir's 70th anniversary season is brought to a close with two of the great choral works of the twentieth century.
Duruflé's 1947 setting of the Requiem is closely based on the traditional plainsong of the funeral Mass - the work (famous for its particularly demanding organ part, played in our performance by NBC's brilliant Assistant Director of Music, Edward Turner) is hugely evocative in its combination of these ancient melodies with Duruflé's sumptuous twentieth-century harmonic language.
Leonard Bernstein was commissed by the Dean of Chichester Cathedral to write a setting of assorted psalm texts for performance at the 1965 Chichester Festival. Dean Walter Hussey's letter to Bernstein mentioned that "many of us would be very delighted if there was a hint of West Side Story about the music" - do come and hear the result of this intriguing juxtaposition of ideas!
