Creswell Crags

About

Creswell Crags in North Nottinghamshire is a limestone gorge honeycombed with caves and smaller fissures. Stone tools and remains of animals found in the caves by archaeologists provide evidence for a fascinating story of life during the last Ice Age between 50,000 and 10,000 years ago. Further evidence came to light in 2003 with the discovery of Britain’s only known Ice Age rock art.

It is also home to the biggest concentration of ‘witches’ marks’ found in British caves. "Apotropaic" marks were scribed into the cave surface as they were thought to keep evil spirits coming from the underworld. Hundreds of these protective marks, believed to be from the 17th and 18th Centuries, were discovered in 2018. 

Ice Age Tours:

Rock Art Tour:
This is your chance to see Britain's only known Ice Age Rock Art, which was discovered by archaeologists in 2003. These engravings of animals, birds and motifs are 13,000 years old, making Church Hole Cave the oldest art gallery in the country.

Witch Mark Tour: 
New for 2019. Hundreds of protective marks, known as Witch Marks, have been discovered at Creswell Crags. This is believed to be the largest collection ever found in the UK. Join our tour guide for a unique opportunity to discover the most recent secret revealed at Creswell Crags

There is no charge to visit Creswell Crags site or to walk around the lake and gorge. It is also free to visit the shop and coffee shop. All day parking is  £6 and details of charges for the exhibition and Cave Tours are given below:
