I first visited Eden Hall Day Spa in the north of Nottinghamshire around five years ago with my mum and totally fell in love the place. Escape rooms, for one reason or another, have experienced a surge in popularity in the last decade. Perhaps it’s because we love to watch others struggling with complex challenges, perplexing puzzles and ludicrous labyrinths on television (The Crystal Maze, anyone?) howling at the screen while the frantic, fumbling participants crack under pressure. On the hunt for something to drag us well and truly out of our drowsy, post-Christmas slump, Visit Nottinghamshire headed to Zaap Thai Street Food, hoping to find a warm welcome to chase away the cold, and strong, fiery flavours to banish the January blues.

We took a trip out to Nottingham Lakeside Arts for a festive afternoon outing to see their Christmas play Red Riding Hood, an imaginative retelling of the classic tale from Olivier award-winning writer Mike Kenny.

Two days after the release of the latest Robin Hood film, Visit Nottinghamshire were invited to experience the Robin Hood Medieval Banquet; an opportunity to bring the age-old rebel to life once again and witness his medieval ways in a lively evening of drinking, dining and spirited shenanigans.

Rarely does a production so effectively take the audience on a journey from laugh-out-loud hilarity to heart-wrenching horror and back again with such style and ease.

If the success of The Crown and the tabloid frenzy surrounding recent Royal weddings is any indication, our collective interest in the inherent theatre of the Monarchy, the conflict between public and private life, remains as strong as ever.
