This spring, Belvoir Castle, nestled in the picturesque Vale of Belvoir, opened its doors to a touching and thought-provoking exhibition—Motherhood at Belvoir. This special exhibition offered a unique insight into the women who shaped the castle’s legacy, from the Duchesses to the nannies who lovingly cared for generations of the Manners family.

While visitors could explore the castle by themselves, we highly recommended joining a guided tour led by one of the castle’s expert guides. We had the pleasure of being shown around by Chris, whose incredible depth of knowledge brought Belvoir Castle’s rich history to life. From its Norman origins (aptly named Belvoir meaning ‘beautiful view’, though the locals rebelliously called it Beaver as a snub to their new French lords) to its royal visitors, every corner of the castle had a fascinating story to tell. Tales of visiting English monarchs such as Charles I, James I, and Mary I, whose imposing portraits adorned the walls of the guardroom, gave an indication of the long history and royal connections that created the story not only of the castle itself but of those who lived within it. Hidden rooms, secret passageways, and quirky anecdotes made the tour even more captivating.

The Motherhood exhibition offered a rare glimpse into the personal lives of the women of Belvoir. These were not only strong, visionary, and educated women but also devoted mothers and wives. The exhibit began with Countess Elizabeth Manners, whose vision and design led to the castle’s current fairytale-like appearance. On the grand staircase, we met Elizabeth in a striking portrait; her love of the castle was evident, and it felt fitting that she welcomed all guests arriving to admire her home. Elizabeth’s presence was felt throughout the castle.

As visitors continued through the castle, the ballroom presented an exquisite display of family dresses, from Victorian evening gowns to coronation dresses from the reigns of Edward VII and George V, and even the elegant wedding dress of the current Duchess of Rutland, Emma Manners. Each piece told a story, bringing to life the eras in which these remarkable women lived.

Belvoir Castle is not just a historical site; it has remained a family home to this day. The presence of the Manners family can be felt throughout, from the portraits lining the cabinets to the children’s cribs and toys from bygone eras carefully displayed. A particularly touching part of the exhibition highlighted the cherished nannies who played a crucial role in raising the castle’s children.

The current Duke of Rutland, David Manners, fondly recalled his own nanny, who cared not only for him and his siblings but also for his father before him. A heartfelt video from the Manners family shared these intimate memories, making the exhibition all the more personal.

Among the many compelling stories, one of the most moving was that of Duchess Violet Manners. A gifted artist and a member of London’s artistic group, The Souls, Violet captured stunning pencil sketches of her own children, so detailed they appeared almost photographic. The most poignant piece of her work could be found in the castle’s chapel: a marble effigy of her nine-year-old son, whom she tragically lost. The depth of her grief and love was etched into the sculpture, making it a deeply emotional and powerful experience for visitors.

Motherhood at Belvoir was included in the castle’s general admission and was a rare chance to explore the personal stories of the inspiring women who lived at Belvoir Castle; women who shaped generations to come.
