On 6th June 1944, the Allied forces mounted the largest seaborne invasion in history, known also as the Normandy landings. A key turning point in WWII, it marked the liberation of France from Nazi control, which would spread to further victories on the Western front.
The UK will celebrate the 80th anniversary of D-Day on 6th of June 2024. Nottingham and Nottinghamshire will be hosting various events and activities to commemorate this landmark occasion. It is a fantastic opportunity for visitors to the UK or our region to be a part of history and learn about the cultural significance which the anniversary holds today.

Join the celebrations to mark the 80th Anniversary of D-Day with 1940s music and decorations. This, the largest community event in the Borough, will bring you an unforgettable fun-filled day with the return of popular headline band the Oasis 2ribute band, and new for 2024, the famous Nottingham Dementia Choir!
Enjoy live music, inflatable fun and fairground rides and classic vehicles, then cool off and enjoy the stalls with a drink from Gladstonian Mobile Bar and Events. Children can learn about army life and enjoy interactive experiences delivered by the HQ Army Centre and Reserve Units.
Nottinghamshire rededication & D-Day service at Southwell Minster

The Royal British Legion are hosting this Nottinghamshire rededication & D-Day service at Southwell Minster. Guests are asked to arrive and be seated before 2pm. Medals and Decorations may be worn.
The Longest Yarn at Southwell Minster
9th - 27th September | Southwell Minster | Free admission
The Longest Yarn is an 80m 3D depiction of that fateful day, 6th June 1944, in wool art. It is coming to Southwell Minster in September in a UK-first as part of commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
With 80 displays, each measuring one metre in length, depicting scenes of the world’s largest amphibious invasion, The Longest Yarn is something quite unique and not to be missed. The scenes include the build-up to D-Day in England, the horrors on the Landing Beaches and the bloody inland battles.
The installation will be first on display in Carentan, France, in May, before coming to Southwell Minster from 9-27 September.
Evening Sunset Parade & Open Air Service with The Royal British Legion

80th D-Day 1940's Dance With The Ashby Little Big Band
Saturday 8th June | Mapperley Plains Recreation & Social Club | £11
Join the Ashby Little Big Band and Guest Vocalist Kitty LaMare as they sing all the war classics. You can also expect a 1940s DJ and dance tuition in the intervals with Heather There will also be a charity raffle for SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airforce, Families Assoc).

Kimberley Commemorates 80th Anniversary of D-Day Landings
Thursday 6th June | Main Street, Kimberley, Nottingham, NG16 2LL | Free
At 8am on the 6th June there will be the reading of the Proclamation at the War Memorial on Main Street. The public are welcome to join the Council and other community representatives for this reading.
At 8.30pm the Chapel on the Hill will host a Beacon lighting ceremony as part of the wider national event. There will be refreshments available, music from a local bagpiper, and at 9.15pm we will light the Beacon.
Hucknall Commemorates 80 years D-Day Anniversary and Armed Forces Evening
Saturday 29th June | The Royal British Legion, Hucknall Branch | 7pm | £5
The Royal British Legion - Hucknall Branch will be holding a commemoration evening on Saturday 29th June 2024.
As part of the evening of entertainment, you can expect to see 1940’s singer Jayne Darling performing wartime and nostalgic music and 1940s dance performances by the students from the Rebekah Priestley dance studio. You can also enjoy a raffle and food, which is included.
They recommend that you join in fancy dress where you can, in your best 1940’s outfits or Uniforms!
Any funds raised during the event will go to Royal British Legion in Hucknall.
D-Day 80th Anniversary Ball 2024
Saturday 28th September | The John Fretwell Centre, Mansfield | £TBC
The Royal British Legion will be holding a Black Tie Ball on Saturday 28th September 2024 to mark the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in Northern France. The evening will start at 6.00pm with a late bar until 1am, included is a 3 course dinner, raffle and disco.
This is a premium Black Tie event and tickets will be on sale later in the year when tables of between 10-12 people per table will be available.
Afternoon Tea at County Hall
Wednesday 12th June | County Hall | 1.30pm
Are your mum, dad, or grandparents over 90? D-Day 80 Capture and Record project to highlight the memories of those that lived through the Second World War. In particular, the individual experiences of the Normandy Landings.
Nottinghamshire residents over 90 with a family member or carer/friend are invited for afternoon tea at County Hall on Wednesday 12 June, 1:30pm to 4pm. Attendees from all walks of life and work are encouraged to bring along medals, photos and memorabilia from that era.
