Tom Voyce | Visit NottinghamshireTwenty-eight-year-old Tom Voyce is a local artist currently exhibiting at Nottingham’s Fletcher Gate Art Gallery. After winning Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year in 2017 Tom was whisked away to Jamaica and has since enjoyed a heightened interest in his works. We had a chat with Tom at the opening of this his exhibition, which features past and recent works in his distinctive colourful, abstract style, with pieces available to view or buy until Thursday 28th June 2018.

What have you been up to in the six months since winning Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year?

Painting a lot! I’ve been working a lot too – I’m an art teacher in my day job. I’ve been trying to make the most of opportunities I’ve had with galleries and people taking an interest in my work. I’ve also been working with the imagery I got from the programme and the trip to Jamaica. There have been lots of things in the pipeline that I’ve not had the time or the confidence to deal with over the past two years, so its allowed me to be more confident in myself.

How did you end up exhibiting at Fletcher Gate Gallery?

I emailed a few galleries in Nottingham, the local area. Claire emailed me back and came along to the small exhibition I had at the time. They loved my work and we started talking about how we could exhibit here. I looked at the gallery and I was amazed by how nice a gallery it was, it’s a proper art gallery – I had never dreamed of having a solo show somewhere like this, so to have that opportunity was just amazing. A year ago, I was painting in a shed!

What’s the experience been like so far?

Claire and the gallery have been amazing, promoting it and supporting it, and making it really professional., so to be doing this now is amazing – especially locally, I can bring friends and family along and share it with the local community. Nottingham is a beautiful city, so it would be great to explore the art scene more. I need to get out and about and see more places here!

What is your process like and what advice do you have for budding artists?

I always sketch wherever I am, I take photographs for colour reference. I have a small set of watercolours and my oils if I can. I tend to work on postcard size, which is why some of my work is quite small, but I always take my sketchbooks with me.

You’ve got to enjoy it, if you don’t enjoy it there’s no point. I’m so lucky in what’s happened to me in the past year, I’ve made a lot more work and got a lot more purpose.

My advice would be to just keep drawing and painting. Find a subject you enjoy and keep doing it. The artists that influence me have been massive in my development, so find artist that influences you. Then keep trying to find that style that makes you your own artist.
