Nottingham’s outstanding universities – the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University – have both been awarded the gold standard in the 2017 teaching excellence framework (TEF) rankings, published yesterday (22 June). Nottingham is the only UK city to have all its universities achieve the gold rating in the TEF, reflecting the excellent standard of undergraduate teaching offered in higher education in the city. The TEF is a government-backed assessment of undergraduate teaching across all higher education institutions in England, with some institutions in Scotland and Wales also taking part.  It has been introduced to recognise and reward excellent teaching to better inform student choices about what and where to study. Nottingham’s universities also both feature in the top 40 of The Guardian university league table for 2018, with University of Nottingham at 19 and Nottingham Trent University at 34, both improving on their rankings from 2017. Brendan Moffett, chief executive of Marketing NG, the official place marketing organisation (PMO) for Nottinghamshire, said the quality of Nottingham’s universities means the city is a leader when it comes to future talent. “Our Universities are going from strength to strength, their teaching has received the highest accolade and they continue to drive our economy with globally significant research and collaboration with industry. Access to the very best talent is a key consideration for companies who we want to choose Nottingham as a place to locate and grow their business.” Nottingham City Council’s Deputy Leader, Councillor Graham Chapman, said: “It’s very pleasing that both of our universities have the highest possible teaching standards in the UK, making Nottingham the only city in the country in this position. This should enhance the reputation of Nottingham as one of the best cities to study not just for quality of teaching but as a vibrant place with plenty to offer for students to enjoy. We also hope this will lead to more graduates choosing to stay here to live and work, boosting the number of businesses and jobs.” Professor Sarah O’Hara, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience at University of Nottingham, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that we have received a TEF Gold rating. It reflects the hard work and creativity of our teaching staff and support colleagues across our UK campuses. Every single one of them has contributed to this institutional award, and I want to thank them all.” Professor Edward Peck, Vice-Chancellor of Nottingham Trent University, said: “Transforming the lives of students, providing a rounded experience, and supporting graduates with initiatives that help them to secure the jobs or further training that launch their careers are all hugely important issues. They are rightly the ones upon which to judge the contribution universities make to students and society.” Commercial property experts JLL recently highlighted the importance of talent when businesses are considering their locations: Nowadays, when it comes to companies looking for a new location to call home for their headquarters or satellite offices, the local talent pool should be the top consideration for most businesses, along with available real estate and the presence of clusters—physical hubs housing a large concentration of same-sector businesses and support services.
