A visit to the Mulberry Tree Cafe

On a recent sunny Sunday, my friend and I decided to visit somewhere new for the afternoon, and we headed to the Mulberry Tree Café in the grounds of picturesque Strelley Hall, on the outskirts of Nottingham. Located in what was originally the stable block for the Hall, the Mulberry Tree Café is open every day and serves a delightful variety of café food, amazing cakes and ice cream. Upon arrival, we first took some time to walk around the grounds and to explore the vicinity, which includes picturesque fields and a historic church. For those feeling a little more energetic (and without a toddler in tow!), there are also a number of walks you can do from the café, including a circular walk along the historic ‘Monk’s Way’, and walks through local woodland and farmland. After our stroll, it was time for lunch, and we were very happy with the options on the menu, which include a range of sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes, salads, homemade quiches and soup. I opted for the gourmet pork, and apple sausage roll, which came with a fresh salad and delicious coleslaw. It was a real treat, very flavoursome and absolutely hit the spot. My friend chose the cheddar and cheese sandwich, which was freshly prepared and also came with a side salad. We then followed this up with one of the homemade apple and sultana scones, which were as fresh as is possible, straight from the oven and served with jam and proper clotted cream. We also couldn’t resist trying the cakes – I had the carrot cake and my friend had the ginger and lime loaf, both of which were fantastic. My little boy opted for a cone of vanilla ice-cream, which is sourced from nearby Bluebells Dairy. The café staff were all very friendly and helpful, and the setting is gorgeous, with tables in amongst the original stables which have now been painted and polished for a stylish dining setting. Outside there is also a very pretty outdoor eating area, ideal for al fresco dining on a sunny day. After lunch we had a look at the Created by Hand craft shop which is in the same courtyard as the café, and will soon be offering craft courses to visitors. It’s worth checking out the café’s website before your visit too, as they often have special events on offer, such as tours of Strelley Hall followed by afternoon tea.
