Update - One year to go!

Start counting the days, it's one year to the day until Robin Hood returns to our cinemas - and he'll be bigger than ever, thanks to an IMAX release. It's been announced that the release date will change from March next year to September, presumably for commercial reasons, to avoid clashing with other blockbuster releases. The film stars Kingsman star, Taron Egerton, as the main man himself, and has been directed by Peaky Blinders’ Otto Bathurst. We've been promised a dark and gritty tale, in the same tone as Peaky Blinders - just 365 days to wait!

Update - New Robin Hood Film has Release Date - March 23, 2018

As we predicted down below, the Lionsgate Robin Hood film has been the first to materialise, and with a release date for early next year, we don't have too long to wait until Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest and Nottingham are back on the big screen! Filming has taken place, and recently released details include the interesting choice to cast comedian Tim Minchin as Friar Tuck. You may also recognise the new Will Scarlett - he will be played by Jamie Dornan, who featured in the 50 Shades films. The new Sheriff of Nottingham, Ben Mendelsohn, is unlikely to be a stranger to Nottingham, having featured in The Dark Knight Rises - which features Nottingham's own Wollaton Hall as Wayne Manor. The historic Old Town of Dubrovnik is being used to simulate a Medieval Nottingham during the filming, and there are some great photos of the filming here. It was announced earlier this year that Jamie Foxx has been signed up to play Little John, alongside Taron Egerton, who will be playing Robin Hood and Eve Hewson, as Maid Marion. Described as a ‘gritty’ tale, Robin Hood: Origins is set to be directed by Peaky Blinders’ Otto Bathurst, and offer a new ‘progressive’ take on the legend. As an origins tale, it sounds like it will be setting up to be the first of many if all goes well. Filming is expected to begin in the autumn. Meanwhile it looks like the new Robin Hood, aka Taron Egerton, may have aspirations to join the X Men once his time in Nottingham has come to an end!

We always love to keep up to date with rumblings in the world of Robin Hood, and with the last major Hollywood venture into Sherwood Forest coming with Ridley Scott's 2010 version featuring Russel Crowe, we think it's about time Hollywood got its act together, and revisited the magical setting of Sherwood Forest. So, almost six years on from his last major outing, we're going to dig into the rumours, and find out what the internet can tell us about when we can next expect to see Robin Hood gracing the world's cinema screens once more. The good news for Robin Hood fans is that our famous outlaw is set to hit the movie theatres in a big way over the coming months and years. There are currently at least five different films in various stages of pre-production. With franchises providing a sure-fire way for big studios to create money-making films with dedicated followings, it seems that all the big hitters are looking to turn Robin Hood into a star, and reinvent the world of Sherwood Forest and Nottingham. The rumours are swirling and, of course, some of these are unlikely to ever see the light of day, but what exactly is there in the pipeline?

Warner Brothers

Warner Brothers are no stranger to dalliances with Nottingham's hero, having created 1938's Adventures of Robin Hood, along with 1991's Prince of Thieves - and it seems they want another go at bringing Robin's adventures to the silver screen. Warner Brothers are believed to have set Gangster Squad writer Will Beall on the case, to create one of the latest spins on the Robin Hood idea. Although The Lego Movie's Dan Lin, and John Zaozirny have been lined up to produce it, there's no expectation that we'll be getting a Lego version of Sherwood Forest's finest just yet. Still, while the premise is being kept closely under wraps, this one's definitely got potential.

Disney

Disney are no strangers to Sherwood Forest either, with their animated animals holding plenty of affection, and winning a lot of fans. This time, they look to be going down a different route, snapping up a screenplay called Nottingham and Hood. The idea for this film is to follow a similar style and tone to the Pirates of The Caribbean franchise, offering a fresh approach, and potentially opening the door to plenty of sequels. Disney will be hoping for a similar scale hit to Johnny Depp's pirate romps, and if this one makes it to the cinemas, it'll certainly thrust Nottingham back into the global spotlight, creating a lucrative movie world for the studio to dip into.

Sony

Hollywood execs at Sony have been getting incredibly excited about the idea of creating a Marvel style universe for Robin Hood - which could lead to various spin-offs and sequels. The Hollywood Reporter has details of the new idea here, which is currently titled 'Hood,' and Sony is reported to have shelled out '$1 million against $2 million' for a pitch by Cory Goodman and Jeremy Lott. With comparisons to the Avengers franchise apparently turning heads, this is definitely one to keep an eye on. If successful, it's likely to lead to spin offs focusing on other member's of Robin's Merry Men.

Dreamworks

A while back, it hit the headlines that Dreamworks, and legendary director Steven Spielberg, were set to create the next Robin Hood outing. Read our article on the news here. It's gone a little quiet on this project, however, with the most recent news articles back in 2014. In fact, we'd go as far as saying that this one may well have been quietly shelved. However, we'll be sure to let you know if we hear anything else.

The Hollywood Gang

We've heard whisperings about a few of these films for some time now, but a new one to enter the race is, perhaps the quirkiest sounding so far. The Hollywood Gang produced the heavily stylised 300, and it seems as though their project Robin Hood 2058 will be a little more left-field than the other interpretations. Described as a 'futuristic re-imagining of Robin Hood,' the film is set to play out in a 'dystopian London, with a rogue MI5 agent on a mission to avenge injustice.' While this sounds like it may only be loosely based on Nottingham and the traditional mythology of Robin Hood, its writer, Tony Lee, has promised that he will 'stay faithful to the legend's source material.'
So it seems as though Lionsgate's version is out in front at the moment, but with so many different studios wanting a piece of the action, Robin Hood fans are sure to be in for a treat over the coming years. Learn more about Robin Hood and Nottinghamshire here.
