So it’s no surprise that there was a real sense of excitement in the air at Nottingham Castle on Friday – as a brand new smartphone app was launched, designed to provide users with a virtual insight into what lies beneath. The app is free to download, and is available to download on both Apple Store and Google Play Store. It gives amazing access to the city’s sealed off caves, featuring detailed fly-through videos, which have been created using high-tech archaeological scanning devices. The app can serve as your complete guide to the caves of Nottingham, whether you want to read the history of a storied cave like Mortimer’s Hole – which was used by Edward III to secretly raid Nottingham Castle and capture Roger de Mortimer – or visit the City of Caves attraction, to explore the various uses for the city’s sandstone labyrinths. An accompanying paper walking trail was also launched on Friday, which will take you on a tour around the top-10 caves in the city, and recommend some great places to stop off – pick up your copy now from Nottingham Tourist Information Centre. The app and trail were launched by some well-known faces, with two Robin Hoods, and Madame Parboiled getting to grips with the easy to use app, which is available on Android and iPhone. These knowledgeable, entertaining tour guides are on hand to lead you into some of the caves featured in the app, and give you a fantastic introduction to the often grisly history concealed within.
