Football's getting beyond a joke for one comedian

We all experience bad luck from time to time, wondering if someone somewhere is conspiring against us to ensure that anything we do or touch doesn't follow the script. It's said that opening an umbrella indoors is unlucky, as too is walking under a ladder or having a black cat walk across your path. One old wives tale even says that if you see a solitary magpie then you should salute it to avoid bad luck - in the case of one UK comedian, magpies are certainly at the centre of his bad luck at the moment! Andy Fury has performed all over the UK in a variety of venues. His latest show, My Cup Upset, has just completed a short tour of the country and is now on its way to Nottingham for the Nottingham Comedy Festival this Friday - so far so good! Andy's show takes audiences through the highs and lows of the 2014 FA Cup, re-living the journey he and his friend Mark embarked upon from the qualifying rounds all the way to the final. Andy says "It's an hour long show telling the highs and lows of a ridiculous road trip through the world's best and most loved football tournament". At this point you might think where's the bad luck? Well for Andy, last Friday saw this week's impending show become a lot more complicated. Firstly, unbeknownst to Andy, the show this week falls on Friday 13th - not the best of starts if you're a tad superstitious. Secondly, and most importantly, the venue for his gig this Friday is Meadow Lane, home to (my boyhood club) Notts County. Last Friday, for those of you who might not be aware, Notts County crashed out of the FA Cup in the first round away to Salford City, a part-time conference team three leagues below them and recently thrust into the media spotlight in a documentary featuring their owners the Class of 92 - Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Phil Neville. It's safe to say that My Cup Upset might not be the best subject for Andy's comedy this Friday night with its now ironic undertones, at the home of a club who've just experienced one of the worst nights in their history in the tournament that takes centre stage in his material - as a Notts fan myself, I  understand Andy's concerns! All you can hope is that the Notts fans simply see the funny side! Andy added "when we decided to come and do the gig I didn't pay much attention to the date. And it wasn't until my phone started going crackers after the Salford game that I realised just how unlucky I was – it's not the best timing in the world, is it!” Andy is hoping to make the audience laugh with his tales from last season's FA Cup however as he rightly adds - "I suspect that County fans might not feel the same way right now!” It's safe to say Andy will be drawing on all his comedic experience this Friday night in a bid to get laughs from disgruntled Notts fans. All I can ask from my fellow Magpies is to go easy on him - it's just a bit of bad luck! The stand up show, My Cup Upset by Andy Fury will be performed at The Sports Bar at Meadow Lane on Friday 13^th November. Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. Tickets are priced at £7 and are available from the Nottingham Comedy Festival website, where you can find details on the rest of the festival.
