Have you ever wondered how Robin Hood would have made his own arrows or the 
techniques he learned in order to put his bow and arrows to good use?
Look no further. Trevor Lilley, a local fletcher, possesses all the skills and know-how on how to craft arrows and how to fire them. We are fortunate enough to be able to share with you some words from the man himself as well as information on an up-and-coming one day course he is offering to pass on his skills. My name is Trevor Lilley and I am running a Fletching day course with Karina Thornton at Sherwood Pines on Saturday 3rd August at their excellent bush-craft & learning site.
Just to provide some background on myself, I'm a blacksmith by trade. I returned to Chesterfield in late 2006 to help friends and family, having worked a couple of jobs before but never finding an opportunity to continue my trade here. It wasn't long before I put my immense love of archery and the social history of the commoners in the medieval period to
use. Many commoners in this period were in fact fletchers.
Upon my return I took up the Hungarian recurve bow that I bought on my travels, practiced shooting and then through the passion I developed, learned how to make my own equipment. No matter how much I learn, there is always one more thing, one more direction to push my interest, one more book to read.
Having always been of a crafty bent and never one to sit still for very long, I turned my hand and thoughts towards wanting to show other people this fascinating pastime and the multifarious crafts and techniques behind it.
The purpose of my day course is to introduce beginners or those with no experience of 
archery or making their own arrows, to do just that. I will showcase a range of tools and techniques including the basic set up that I started out with. All materials are provided and you are free to take home the arrow you make at the end of the day. If time and weather permits, I will offer a handling session with one of my traditional bows and the chance to shoot some arrows with it.
I hope to see you there and be able to pass on these unique skills to a new generation of budding fletchers.
