What brings a 70s pop icon from the new wave underground of New York all the way to Sherwood Forest? The Forest Live outdoor concerts at Sherwood Pines, that’s what!
On the 14th and 15th June, Sherwood Pines – the East Midlands’ largest public forest – is opening its gates for thousands of music lovers to come and enjoy live music from Brit nominee Paloma Faith and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members, Blondie.
But most people will know Sherwood Pines as a great place to come for a thrash about on a mountain bike, a run around with the dog, a place for the kids to let off steam in the adventure play areas or the home of high wire adventure, Go Ape. So why do we host these Forest Live concerts?
The Forestry Commission, who manage the public forest estate, including Sherwood Pines, is committed to encouraging as many people as possible to enjoy the woodlands, to feel at home in them, and to learn about them (and about respecting their environment) through experiencing them in different ways. And the Forest Live programme also provides valuable revenue to plough back into our management of woodlands in a variety of social, recreation and environmental projects. In recent years this has included work on habitat creation for endangered species, health projects to get more people active in the natural environment, the development of top quality mountain biking trails and helping play our part in the fight against climate change.
The concerts take place outside in the large space just down from the visitors’ centre, which is surrounded by giant pine trees. This unusual setting provides a great atmosphere and allows people to see the forest in a way that most visitors don’t get the chance to. And if previous years’ concerts are anything to go by, then this year should be a cracker!
