Think you make a mean mince pie? Cafe.Bar.Contemporary is challenging all the baking enthusiasts in Nottingham to put their mince pie-making skills to the test in a city wide competition.
Not only will the winner be crowned mince pie maker of Nottingham, but there is a Kindle Fire, shopping vouchers and free meals up for grabs.
To enter the competition, you must take a batch of your best mince pies along to the café for judging on Wednesday, 19 December at 4pm.
And if you can’t make it on the 19th, you can drop off a few of your pies in a container to the café beforehand.
The judges will be the cafe bar’s head chef, Ashley Childs, editor of local foodie magazine Nottinghamshire Flavours Alison Lowe, and Lynette Pinchess, features writer at the Nottingham Post.
The idea for the mince pie competition came from general manager of Cafe. Bar. Contemporary Lucy Hamlin, general manager of the cafe bar. She told us: “We’ve all been getting into the festive spirit here at Cafe.Bar.Contemporary and both staff and customers have been enjoying our mince pies.
“There’s been a lot of chatter in the café bar among staff and customers about what makes the best mince pie, so we thought we’d lay the matter to rest by organising a competition.
“So, if anyone out there thinks they can make a decent mince pie, bring them down to the café for judging on the 19th.”
Ashley Childs, head chef at the café bar, has given us some sneaky tips on what he’ll be expecting from the winners. He said: “What I look for in a good mince pie is plenty of filling with a beautiful wintery spice and juicy fruits that burst flavour into your mouth when biting into them. The pastry should be short buttery.”
