This walkthrough will be led by Caroline Fucci and will explore the exhibition Allan Weber: My Order.
Caroline is a researcher, curator, educator and a PhD candidate at the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester. Her research interests lie in the areas of exhibition histories, curatorial studies and practices, contemporary art and globalisation, aesthetics, and art and culture in the post-1989 context, with a focus on Brazil.
This season sees the first institutional solo exhibition dedicated to Brazilian artist Allan Weber's work presented in a major UK cultural institution. Working across a range of mediums including assemblage, installation, sculpture and photography, Weber's practice acts as a vehicle to deconstruct the realities of daily life within the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
His work incorporates material and visual elements he views as synonymous with life in the favelas. This includes tarps used at funk parties, common architectural features such as water reservoirs, popular hair styles, and firearms associated with organised crime.
Working in the traditions and legacy of Brazilian Constructivism, Weber appropriates these elements into compositions that transform their social meaning. Centring the culture of the favela within the core of his work, Weber invites the viewer to connect with a part of Rio de Janeiro's society often maligned and neglected.
