Hear the facinating story of the Rutland Roman Villa Mosiac.

The find of this high-status Roman mosaic in Rutland has been deemed “the most exciting discovery for a century”.  In 2020, a high-status Roman Villa was discovered close the River Chater, south of Rutland Water.  The University of Leicester undertook an excavation which uncovered part of a fabulous and dramatic mosaic, consisting of three panels, each portraying a scene from the Siege of Troy as described in the Iliad.  Surface pottery was found, and Google satellite images used which in turn, led to a professional excavation.

Archaeologist Peter Liddle’s fascinating talk explains how the excavations that took place revealed the most incredible mosaic pavement showing the story of Hector and Achilles at the siege of Troy, and the villa in whose main room it lay.

All are welcome to come along and listen to this fascinating account of how this incredible mosaic was found in a farmers field in Rutland.
