Sarah Jane Morris and Tony Remy present The Sisterhood
Her voice, her versatility, and her emotional intelligence - the absolute authenticity of feeling which she conveys - make her a world-class compelling performer.
"SARAH Jane Morris is one of this country's leading creative forces… she is someone who is constantly willing to experiment and reinvent themselves in the quest for musical excellence" – Close Up Culture, Ronnie Scott's gig review
Sarah Jane Morris is a singer with an astonishing vocal range. Her 44-year career, during which she has garnered a loyal and loving international audience, has been wide-ranging and her rich contralto voice goes from strength to strength. She has performed with many groups over the years (Number 1 duet of Don't Leave Me This Way with Jimmy Somerville in 1986), from rock to soul to African blues, with classical orchestras, a one-hundred cello ensemble, with acoustic guitars and jazz big bands: most recently a duet recorded with Mario Biondi which comes out in March. Her voice, her versatility, and her emotional intelligence – the absolute authenticity of feeling which she conveys – make her a world-class compelling performer.
"To honour the legacies of these stars, whilst creating new work demands a breadth of experience of different popular musical forms as well as great versatility in performance styles. Clearly Morris and Remy have the necessary skills" – London Jazz News
The Sisterhood is Sarah Jane Morris's personal tribute to, and celebration of 12 female artists prominent in the music world during the last century. They are Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Rickie Lee Jones, Annie Lennox, Kate Bush, Sinead O Connor.
The songs are written about the lives of these singers and musically written with her co-writer Tony Remy in the musical genre each singer songwriter is known for. The choice is clearly subjective and anybody with an interest in music would probably come up with some different choices. Thankfully, the list of remarkable female artists is long. But in terms of a representative group that needed to be condensed into a single album, her choice is pretty good.
The project was launched on International Women's Day 2024 at The Alexandra Palace Theatre, London and is now touring.
Their 1st single about Rickie Lee Jones was single of the week on Jazz FM.
Pioneers of Music, Sarah and Tony have respectfully researched the lives of these women who were/are all great artists and great cultural transformers. The lyrics tell their stories, as does the music that was created for each song, using the characteristic genre and stylistic markers appropriate to each artist…Now is your chance to experience the same joy and excitement listening to it as they did making it.
The single 'Tomorrow Never Happens' about Janis Joplin comes out on March 8th.
