Never been to a ceilidh (pronounced Kay-Lea btw) before? Actually, it doesn't matter how many of them you've done before, or if you've done none at all.
The person calling the dances (Schuggie) tells everyone what they need to do, and keeps it going. Everyone dances with everyone, whether you know each other or not. The more people the better!
Everyone gets a go. No one has the chance to bust different moves, and because no one *really* knows what's going on it's very difficult to feel self-conscious. Essentially, most people are just guessing what they're supposed to be doing, and that makes it brilliant.
There are lots of friendly folks to give you a hand and get everyone up dancing. We call these folks, Ceilidh Ninjas. These ceilidhs are fun, social and inclusive. You will however need to bring along a sense of humour as half the fun of ceilidh dances is making mistakes. You don't have to be a member of the Nottingham Ceilidh Club to come and join in the craic.
Ceilidhs are enjoyed by all ages – from youngsters' first Scottish dancing experience to old-timers out enjoying a burl. People come dressed in jeans, full highland dress – and everything in between.
More Info:
- Wear something comfortable to dance in.
- Their ceilidhs will be recorded to improve both the dancer's experience i.e. how I call the dances and to advertise future ceilidhs.
- If you don't want to be included in any of these promotional videos, please let the event organisers know on the night.
- Lastly, please don't take your own alcohol into the hall. Buy your drinks from the bar which is very reasonably priced and don't forget that the water is free.
