Calling all classical music fans in the area: if you love fantastic performances of wonderful pieces then Nottingham Symphony Orchestra has three of the best in store for you at the city's Albert Hall venue on Saturday 8 March.
Under the baton of acclaimed conductor Mark Prescott, the orchestra will launch the concert with Richard Strauss's energetic tone poem Don Juan, one of the exciting early works that launched the German composer on the road to greatness. Full of passion and memorable melodies, Don Juan is the perfect way to start the concert, which gets under way at 7.30pm at the city centre venue. Also, in the first half you can hear Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto, a key work by one of the best American composers of the 20th century. For this performance of the lyrical and expansive work, NSO will be joined by guest soloist Darragh Morgan. Hailing from Northern Ireland, Darragh is an experienced and highly rated performer, both in chamber music and as an in-demand soloist with orchestras across Europe and beyond.
Finally, the concert rounds off with one of the greatest of all British classical pieces, Edward Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations. The composer's breakthrough work was a sensation at its premiere in 1899 and is a musical portrait of 12 of his friends, plus Elgar himself and his wife, with the much-loved movement Nimrod at its centre.
