St Mary Magdalene Parish Church sits at the heart of the historic market town of Newark-on-Trent. Dating to the 12th century, the church was built up over the following centuries, and displays fine examples of Transitional Norman, Early English, Decorated Gothic and Perpendicular Gothic architecture.
The interior of St Mary’s has several points of interest including fine examples of 16th century chantry chapels, one of the largest Medieval monumental brasses in the country, and the earliest treasury in an English Parish Church.
St Mary’s has a strong musical tradition through the Magnus Song School, dating back to 1532, and one of the oldest Parish Church choirs in the country. The choir sings every Sunday at the Sung Eucharist and Evensong services.
St Mary Magdalene is a Grade 1 listed building, which is currently on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register. Grants of £3,064,126 from National Lottery players through The National Lottery Heritage Fund, support from Historic England, the Church of England, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund will enable vital repairs to be made to the Church, removing it from the Heritage at Risk Register, breathing new life into the visitor experience, and saving the building for future generations.
St Mary’s will be closed from November 2024- December 2024 for this repair work. The building and restoration work will involve some high level masonry repairs, stained glass conservation and the construction of new visitor facilities. Events and activities will run throughout this period, including monthly hard hat tours for those interested in following the progress of the works.
