Nottingham is known the world over for its stunning, ancient Sherwood Forest. Head to Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre and take a leisurely stroll through this legendary woodland to see one of the world’s most iconic trees: the Major Oak.
Click here for the Sherwood Forest trail map or, for the real adventurers, take a look at the Jurys Inn Map of Sherwood Forest.
There’s a variety of woodland trails to choose from, where you can find the other Giants of the forest, explore how the forest changes over the seasons, and see the variety of wondrous wildlife. You can also visit Sherwood Pines, which offers an abundance of routes for walkers and cyclists.
If you're staying at Forest Holidays' Sherwood Forest Cabins, you can enjoy peaceful relaxation or enjoy a range of activities such as cycling or walking. Enjoy with family, as a couple or with friends.
The Time to Connect Art Trail features a series of six artworks created and installed by artist and sculptor Chris Campbell based at the sites of Papplewick Pumping Station, Newstead Abbey, RSPB Sherwood Forest, Rufford Abbey, Vicar Water Country Park and Bestwood Country Park.
You may also enjoy the Sherwood Voices Storytelling Audio Walks. This series of six audio walks was created, written and directed by Excavate's Andy Barrett, and led by Sherwood people, who will take you on a journey through the stories and culture of the Sherwood Forest area. These walks have been created through hours of conversation with people from across the area, and alongside the storytellers you will hear from shepherds, anglers, undertakers, park rangers, vicars, schoolchildren, and many others. Each walk responds to the sights and sounds that you will come across on your journeys, and each delves into the past, the present and something of the future. Each walk lasts around two hours and includes detailed instructions on where to go as part of the audio.
Other woodland walks for those who like to have a wander through the trees include the rambler’s paradise Thieves Wood in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Blidworth Woods at the southern end of Sherwood Forest, the deep woodland at Clumber Park or the hillside Colwick Woods, where you can catch a glimpse of stunning views over Nottingham city. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for snowdrops and bluebells in the spring!
The essential Sherwood Forest experience, taking you to the iconic Major Oak, Robin’s famous hiding place, and winding back through the magical forest to the visitor centre.
Sherwood Forest is home to Europe’s largest collection of ancient oaks, and you can walk amongst the giants of this forest, on a trail that visits just a few of them.
This walk is designed to celebrate seasonal change, showing beautifully how this landscape adapts over the year.
Ideal for adventurers, experience the different habitats which the RSPB is looking after for future generations.
