The Storm Whale

Looking for the perfect family outing this festive season? The Storm Whale is an enchanting children’s theatre production for ages 3+ that’s capturing hearts at Lakeside Arts this Christmas. Based on Benji Davies' award-winning books, this magical show offers a wonderful way to celebrate the season with your little ones. Reviews are already glowing – check out what LeftLion and Kev Castle have to say – and here are five reasons why it’s an experience you simply can’t miss:

1. The Perfect Introduction to Theatre for Little Ones

If you’re looking to introduce your child to the magic of live theatre, The Storm Whale is an ideal choice. Tailored for ages 3+, this gentle and engaging production keeps young audiences captivated with imaginative storytelling, heart-warming songs, and delightful puppetry. It’s the perfect first step into the world of theatre.

2. Based on Award-Winning Books by Benji Davies

Do you know Noi, the little boy who lives by the sea with his dad and six cats? The Storm Whale won the Oscar’s Book Prize in 2014 and was written and illustrated by Benji Davies, who is also the author of Grandad’s Island – the Children’s Book of the Year at the Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Awards 2015.  This stage adaptation of The Storm Whale and The Storm Whale in Winter brings these beautifully illustrated stories to life, immersing audiences in the touching tale of friendship, loneliness and family, all set against a beautiful seaside backdrop.

3. A Cast Full of Fun and Surprises

The cast brings so much fun and joy to this production! Charlotte, who plays Flo, has lots of other jobs – including being a part-time princess. Hanna, who brings Noi to life, absolutely loves the beach (a perfect match for this seaside adventure). And Richard, playing Dad, grew up right here in Nottinghamshire and has even sung for a Queen (and a princess)!

4. More Than Just a Show – A Whale of a Lot More to Explore

The fun doesn’t stop with the performance. Created by the talented pupils of Djanogly Strelley Academy under the direction Nottingham-based theatre designer Hannah Boothman, you’ll be able to see a stunning Storm Whale-themed installation at Lakeside Arts. Kids can colour on a boat-shaped table, search for six hidden cats, and discover our lighthouse reading nook. Plus if you sneak up the stairs you might just spot a miniature Noi! Families can also purchase the storybooks or a sustainably made plush whale to take home. And don’t miss the delicious treats: grab an ice cream during the interval or enjoy a warm hot chocolate from the café for the perfect winter treat.

5. An Inclusive Theatre Experience for Everyone

Lakeside is committed to making theatre accessible for everyone. The Storm Whale is designed to be an inclusive experience: there are fidget toys and ear defenders for anyone who needs them, the intimate theatre space creates a comfortable environment, and the staff are welcoming and on hand to help. The show’s story of friendship and family resonates with both children and adults alike.

The Storm Whale runs until Sunday 5th January 2025 at Lakeside Arts. Tickets are selling fast, so book now to secure your spot on this unforgettable festive adventure! Tickets range from £10.50 - £12.
