Our Tour & What To Expect

Our meeting point? The left lion, of course (a famous meeting spot for locals)! We met our amazing tour guide, Sam, there at 10.30am prompt. We would be joining a tour with other customers, including a couple from Spain. We learned about the history of Nottingham and it’s Saxon founder, Lord Snot, while standing in Old Market Square before setting off for the Lace Market area. Sam pointed out notable spots along the way including blue plaques of significance as well as notable buildings and the history behind them.

In the Lace Market, we would learn about a variety of topics including architecture and Nottingham’s history of lace making. The relaxed and friendly environment meant we could stop to take plenty of pictures, which was essential as the sun was shining! We were also able to ask Sam a range of questions about the history of the city, which she happily answered with excellent historical knowledge. It was an absolute treat speaking to Sam, and she welcomed a dialogue as we continued to talk about the city.

After passing by St Mary’s church and the National Justice Museum, some of the oldest buildings in the city centre, we walked down to the Castle quarter to learn about Mortimer’s Hole, and ending with the perfect photo opportunity at the Robin Hood statue.

The tour lasted for one hour and thirty minutes, taking us to mid-day, which is the usual run-time that you can expect. We can’t thank Sam enough for allowing us to join on this fantastic tour, which offers a brilliant overview of some key historical sights around the city centre.

It’s a perfect tour for anyone wanting to geta quick snapshot of the different areas of the city centre, as well as a general understanding of the history of Nottingham.

Key Info

The route is not particularly challenging, but does involve walking, standing and crossing roads throughout the hour and a half, so we recommend contacting Walking Tours if you have any specific access requirements or concerns. Please note that there are a few inclines and declines on the walking route, which follow the natural relief of the city centre.

Tours start at 10.30am at the left lion in Old Market Square. They run most days throughout the year, meaning it is a convenient activity to fit into your itinerary, no matter how long you’re visiting Nottingham!

The tour is suitable for all ages, including families and young children, but it does reference some grizzly themes at a couple of venues such as the National Justice Museum and Nottingham Castle. While these are factual and not sensationalised, we would recommend getting in touch with Walking Tours if you have any concerns.

The tour starts from £12pp, and private tours are also available for £85.
