We joined the New Art Exchange for the opening of their new (and free) ‘Journey of the Mind’ exhibition, and were welcomed into a fascinating display of mindfulness, Sikh teachings and storytelling.
A unique exhibition of self discovery, the stunning artwork, by world-renowned Sikh artist Kanwar Singh, invites you to experience Sikh teachings through the lens of storytelling. Specifically, it grapples with how the mind battles against negative forces within to find peace in troubled times through focused practice, community and selfless service.
You will be amazed by the scenes captured on canvas, each based on those who historically attained the highest spiritual levels from Sikh history. Each canvas is accompanied by an explanation of the narrative, providing context and then relating the key themes and lessons back to Sikh teachings and mindfulness. This means the exhibition is extremely accessible for those new to the religion, cultivating a welcoming and educational tone.
You will also enjoy short films by British animator Christian Wood. These explore the Sikh concept of Wahe-guru, one of the main themes of mindfulness in the Sikh religion and the exhibition as a whole. The animation invites you into a practice, and welcomes you to explore new routes to mindfulness.
The exhibition was conceived by arts organisation Without Shape Without Form, who aim to encourage visitors to think about their own minds to help improve mental wellbeing, and this wonderful exhibition does just that. There are also a couple of interactive elements where you can share your thoughts and reactions to the content of the displays, bringing out the essence of community, learning and art that the New Art Exchange are known for.
Catch it until 22nd April daily from 10am - 4pm. You can also enjoy a guided exhibition tour on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am-12pm, and make sure you stop by their plant based CaféBar, which serves a delicious world food menu.
