On the beautiful sunny evening, Jack Savoretti brought his ‘Singing to Strangers Tour’ to Sherwood Pines and my friends and I were treated to a magical performance in an equally magical venue.
Jack was supported by the vocal harmonies of the ‘Wandering Hearts’ who, although not my bag, warmed up the crowd perfectly. However, it was when Jack took to the stage that the temperature significantly rose! Jack's unkempt locks and smart blue suit with unbuttoned shirt collar combined with his raspy voice full of emotion mesmerised the audience as the sun went down.
He started his performance with the album opener ‘Candlelight’, which could easily be the next Bond theme. Jack’s beautiful - sometimes velvety and sometimes raspy - voice and commanding stage presence quickly captured everyone’s attention. Whilst singing from the male point of view Savoretti certainly knows how to talk to the female heart. The predominantly female audience called out ‘I love you Jack’ whilst they swayed, and sang along to songs such as ‘Love is on the Line’, ‘Better off without me’ and the soulful sounding hit ‘What more can I do’.
As the light changed and the trees turned blue, I recognised the haunting shivering steel guitar introduction of ’Dying for your love’ - my favourite track of the album. The song did not disappoint and was elevated to another level in the beautiful surroundings of Sherwood Forest.
Towards the end of the evening the songs did get a bit more upbeat and we took to our feet to the more energetic track ‘Back where I belong’. Equally charming throughout his performance were his anecdotes to some of his songs, including the story about his daughter once telling her friends about what her daddy does for a living to which she replied he goes around the world ‘Singing to Strangers’ hence the title of his new album. Although, I guess in theory Jack does indeed sing to strangers for a living, his wonderful charm, personality and beautiful voice gives the feeling that he is in fact singing to you personally. All in all, it was a great evening’s entertainment in a truly fitting environment.
Forest Live will return next year with even more musical talent so keep your eyes peeled for future announcements.
