Another long weekend looms on the horizon and Nottingham is set to be buzzing with excellent events and that breezy bank holiday spirit this weekend. BBC RADIO NOTTINGHAM'S BIG DAY OUT
Whether you are a Nottingham resident or here for a leisurely weekend, this county wide event is an excellent excuse to get yourself to those places you’ve meant to visit but never got around to doing so. You’ll be truly spoilt for choice with over 25 different attractions, galleries, museums, country parks and heritage sights offering free entry. PIKES & PLUNDER at THE NATIONAL CIVIL WAR CENTRE
The town of Newark in north Nottinghamshire was host to one of the most pivotal scenes of the English Civil War. As a mainstay for Charles I the town was attacked numerous times and received national significance for the dramatic events which took place within its borders. Now home to The National Civil War Centre, and a beautifully ruinous castle, the quaint town of Newark is bringing back the troops this weekend for a huge civil war re-enactment. Expect musket fire and fighting, history brought to life through stories and live demonstrations, and over a dozen regiments involved.
1940s KNEES UP at NOTTINGHAM CASTLE
Get your glad rags on for the annual 1940s Knees Up at Nottingham castle! A jolly good afternoon of nostalgic fun is promised with music, dancing and displays bringing the war years to life. A replica Mark IX Spitfire will be on display, along with musicians Johnny Victory and Nostalgia Unlimited plus Jayne Darling and the Kalamazoo Dance Band, military displays and the Swing Dancers.
EZEKIAL BONE'S LACE MARKET TOUR
This is an exciting week for Nottingham’s historical raconteur Ezekial Bone. Along with receiving a nomination in the Tour Guide category for the Visit England Awards for Excellence, it’s also the launch of his brand new Lace Market tour.
Delve into the raucous history of Nottingham’s oldest district, from its glory days of the internationally renowned lace trade to the grim reality of post war deprivation. With Ezekial’s knowledge and charisma he weaves into these cinematic streets the real life stories of rebellion, industry, revolt and reform which collectively form the personality of the Nottingham we know today.
Events at Debbie Bryan have proven to be consistently popular, and with their charming decor, delicious refreshments from the tea room and diverse program of things to learn and do, we can see why. Get stuck into a new hobby, meet some new friends and craft away the afternoon at Speedcraft this Sunday, which is set to be a creative whirlwind featuring five different projects to learn under knowledgeable designers. With beautiful wares for sale and a true passion for artisan crafts cultivated within the shop and studio, you’re sure to leave inspired.
Fans of film and television will love getting their geek on this weekend at EM-Con, the biggest film and television convention in the East Midlands. Some great star guests are lined up, along with stalls to see and buy props, comics, and collectables from famous shows. Much fun will of course be had with the costumes, and as always fans will be going to lengths to recreate their favourite characters' looks.
