A former manor house dating back to 1903, nestled within the Nottinghamshire countryside in the small village of Kelham, Kelham House Country Manor Hotel is a hidden gem which does not try to be something it's not. In fact, the loving restoration to this property, which finished around five years ago, has simply freshened the place up with a new lick of paint, period furnishings and a light, bright, airy feel that leaves you feeling right at home from the moment you walk in the door.
We were invited to see the hotel in February and take a tour with Heritage Estates Director Jon-Paul Davies to see why guests are raving so much about Kelham House and leaving with a smile on their face. I've driven past Kelham House several times before, but never had the privilege of stepping over the threshold. Its location is perfect; within a 10 minute drive of Newark, an hour and a half away from London by train, a stone's throw from many beauty spots and attractions such as Sherwood Forest, and 30 minutes from Nottingham which is easily accessible via the A46.
From the moment you walk into Kelham House, you're greeted with a warm, welcoming 
atmosphere. The decor is clean and crisp but maintains original period features. It's a perfect mix of old and new. The Kitchen Garden Restaurant, situated at the rear of the hotel, is one of the most recent additions to the building and is lined with glass patio doors, maximizing the natural light. Chandeliers hang from the ceiling and a small bar makes this room ideal for corporate lunches, weddings or parties. The food is top notch too. Our two course lunch was beautifully presented and it's safe to say that everyone sat around our table thoroughly enjoyed it. I tried the chicken wrapped in bacon with roast potatoes and gravy with a side of vegetables. It was just what the doctor ordered on a cold February afternoon.
After our lunch, each table was invited to take a tour of the hotel and see the rooms and facilities first hand. What made me fall in love with Kelham House was that it still retains its original Manor House look and feel. The reception is painted in subtle creams but has a feature wall of purple pattern wallpaper to add that modern feel. A roaring open fire makes it feel homely and the personal welcome guests receive from the staff is a great touch. From the reception there's doors into a bar/seating area with live TV, small dining/conference rooms and the staircase up to the bedrooms above. Jon Paul and the 
team have made a great job of this project and it's no wonder guests love staying here. The bedrooms are spacious, airy and boast all the facilities you need for a cosy stay in the country. There's 12 luxury en-suite rooms on site, split between the main hotel building and the converted coach house outside.
Outside the hotel, the summer months are catered for with plenty of seating and nine acres of surrounding land to look out upon. And as I mentioned before, you're a stone's throw from beauty spots, rural attractions and market towns as well as the striking Kelham Hall on the opposite side of the road.
The team at Kelham describe the venue as a place 'where classic elegance meets contemporary style' - and I couldn't put it better myself. So if you're planning a rural break away from all the hustle and bustle, but you still want to be near enough to major transport networks and great things to do, you'll struggle to find a more perfect location than Kelham House Country Manor Hotel.
