Malt Cross scoops Civic Society Award

The Malt Cross has been presented with an award from the Nottingham Civic Society for improving the fabric of the city. The announcement follows the completion of extensive renovation work at the St James’s Street Café-Bar, which has been restored to its Victorian era glory. Ken Brand, Board member at the Nottingham Civic Society said: “Our enthusiasm for the Malt Cross and decision to make the award is based on the centre trustees’ considered approach to the restoration of this complex and fascinating building. “The work on the building’s principal space has made the most of its beautiful, innovative barrel-shaped timber roof; equally impressive is the revival of the lower floors. The imposing timber staircase leading down to the thirteenth century caves has been restored, along with a number of historic key features, including the old well.” Restoration work began after a £1.38 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in February, with the two basement levels and cave turned into a new heritage, music, arts and crafts hub. The six-month project concluded with the doors reopening in October. Jo Cox-Brown, chief executive of the Malt Cross Trust, said: “It’s wonderful for the team to be recognised for its efforts. The Malt Cross has lots to offer the many people who have yet to discover it.” The Nottingham Civic Society is a non-political, voluntary organisation founded to protect the city’s character, its historic buildings and open spaces.
