About

Wednesday 30th October | 2024 | 7pm
Metronome
£25.00 + booking fee

On 'Homeland', Keita explores his identity, sense of belonging and questions the very idea of home through soulful ballads, pop anthems, and irresistibly dancey songs led by electrifying percussion set up. Transitional musical poetry written and delivered by award-winning poets is beautifully woven into the music, making this a one-of-a-kind live experience.

With this show, Seckou's magical 22-string Kora is perfectly integrated into an impressive and electrifying set which often bursts into joyful, percussive dance tracks infused with infectious rhythms. Be prepared to be moved (emotionally and physically) through this unique crossover sound, embracing Senegalese music, afro-pop, urban and hip-hop.

For the first time in over ten years, Seckou will be playing his Kora standing up, a tradition that shaped the early part of his career and which was initially inspired by his uncle and mentor, the late Solo Cissokho, one of Senegal's most famous pop stars.

Seckou Keita and his Homeland band will keep the audience on their toes and undoubtedly bring them to their feet to dance!

Dubbed as "the Hendrix of the Kora", Seckou's innovative approach and exceptional skill constantly pushes the boundaries of what the instrument can achieve. With a discography boasting 14 critically-acclaimed albums cumulating over 25 million streams on Spotify alone, and a collection of prestigious awards, including multiple BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, he always leaves an indelible mark on the music scene.

Line up:
Seckou Keita: Kora, vocals
Moustapha Gaye: guitar
Moussa Ngom: Keyboards and sampling
Mouctar N'Diongue: drum kit , drum pad and backing vocals
Modou Gueye: bass
N'Dyeye Korka Dieng: backing vocals
Dialy Kemo Cissokho: percussion and backing vocals

"There is something uplifting and utterly contemplative about this music" – Sean Rafferty, BBC Radio 3

"Seckou Keita can be classed alongside the great Toumani Diabate as one of the adventurous masters of the kora" – The Guardian
