"Exemplary hard bop" – Jazz Journal "The most beautiful, elegant and melodic delivery" – London Jazz News
An award-winning trumpeter and composer, Hugh studied at the Royal Academy of Music and at the Paris Conservatoire, graduating with a 1st class BMus in Jazz and LRAM diploma. In February 2023 he was elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) by the Academy's honours committee in recognition of a significant contribution to UK jazz.
In spring 2022 his quartet completed a 20 date tour of the UK in support of his debut album Borderlands, to critical acclaim. Following this the band toured again in the Autumn of 2022 as a quintet with renowned saxophonist James Allsopp completing the classic front line of trumpet and tenor. They embarked on a further 20 dates as a quintet around the UK and Ireland in 2023, recording their latest album Viewfinder in the summer, with a sold-out concert at The Pizza Express Jazz Club ending the year. As a featured sideman Hugh's performed and recorded with a huge variety of artists, playing at festivals and jazz venues across the country and throughout Europe.
Recent projects include recording with guitarist Peter Bernstein as a member of the David Ferris Septet, recording with Jacqui Dankworth and the BBC Big Band, and performing in Europe with The Last Poets. He's also currently a member of Tony Kofi's Inside Straight and of rising star guitarist Aidan Pope's Octet.
