Learn about the history and stories of Bennerley Viaduct with this countryside walk. Built in 1878 to carry a branch line of the Great Northern Railway, Bennerley is an iconic sight in the local landscape, and was even mentioned by D. H. Lawrence in 'Sons and Lovers'. Closed to trains in the 1960s, it was recently rescued by a grassroots charity, the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct, and reopened to the public for cycling and walking. This 1400ft monument straddles the Derbyshire-Nottinghamshire border, with intricate lattice work and beautiful natural surroundings. The view from the top over the Erewash Valley is breath-taking.
The viaduct is an engineering marvel and a must-see for railway and industrial history fans. Walk along the new deck and see the views of D.H. Lawrence country and explore the new wildlife habitat beneath, where volunteers have created new pathways.
Your tour guide will share the history of the viaduct, and the story of its rescue for the local community.
