A waterside walk is the perfect way to spend an afternoon and the villages along Nottinghamshire’s rivers and canals are ideal places to visit if you want to break up your walk. They are generally flat with good pathways, making them ideal for novice walkers and families.
You could walk along Nottingham’s Victoria Embankment, which is a grand, landscaped park alongside the River Trent. It’s the ideal place for a Sunday afternoon family stroll whilst you watch the boats on the river, and you could grab lunch at one of Nottingham’s many riverside pubs including Embankment.
The pretty village of Gunthorpe lies on the banks of the River Trent and is particularly popular with walkers on a warm summer’s evening.
You could also explore the beautiful riverside area of Farndon near Newark. Start your walk at the Chapel Lane car park (grid reference SK768521) and look out for St Peter’s Church, which dates back to Elizabethan times. The Organ Grinder is the perfect place for lunch, dinner or a drink while you are out exploring. It has won both the CAMRA Pub of the year and CAMRA Cider Pub of the year the last few years.
Alternatively, take a stroll along the Nottingham and Beeston Canal, which takes you from the heart of the city along Nottingham’s vibrant waterfront district which is buzzing with bars, restaurants and al fresco dining. Why not stop for a pint at the famous Canalhouse or and spot sights such as Nottingham Castle and Beeston Lock on your walk?
You can also take a beautiful walk around Beeston Marina, where you will see canalboats, wildlife and a cosy cafe where you can reward yourself with a nice cuppa and a delicious scone!
