Located halfway between Nottingham and Southwell, Lowdham is the kind of village that gets called “quaint” or “rustic”, and it is a sleepy kind of place. Except for the one week of the year when it plays host to the Lowdham Book Festival. Literary events can be thirsty work so it’s just as well that Lowdham is crammed with pubs, including the beautifully preserved Old Ship Inn. The Golden Fleece. One of my favourite old-school real ale pubs, boasting live music and the famous (or should that be infamous?) LeftLion quiz night. And the food! The Fleece have won the Best Bar Food award three years running, as well as the Best Sunday Roast 2010. They’ve won for a reason! Savoy Cinema. The Broadway Cinema gets name-checked a lot in this column and rightly so – it’s a cosmopolitan arts centre any city would be proud of. But I love the Savoy for its slightly faded art deco look and the fact that you can see a new release with your partner for the same price as a single ticket at a multiplex. And as a movie buff, the place in Nottingham I miss the most is The Screen Room, which used to be the smallest, friendliest, most eclectic cinema in the city, possibly the world."
