"Extraordinary" – Tom Robinson, BBC 6Music
"Project Blackbird have a way of making music that sounds like it could have been around for years, like an old friend that you have a relaxed and warm relationship with. They distil elements of pop, jazz, soul and reggae into a gentle and nourishing one-pot meal." – Joy Zine
The five musicians behind the East Midlands, UK-based Project Blackbird are multi-instrumentalist Jamie Varley, drummer Eddie Dublin, multi-instrumentalist Jon Read (former trumpet player for The Specials), vocalist Ming Nagel (originally from the USA), and guitarist Alan Roberts.
This "extraordinary" band, as BBC 6Music's Tom Robinson has described them, offers an atmospheric, eclectic listening experience that draws equally upon intellect and emotion. "Imagine a party at Ronnie Scott's," one supporter suggests, "where Sade, Björk, Jeff Beck, and David Byrne meet Portishead and then go for a late night curry to exchange ideas…sublime".
Project Blackbird have been championed by BBC Leicester's Uncle Frank (Frank Benbini of Fun Lovin' Criminals) as well as an increasing number of independent stations, presenters, album listeners, and gig audiences. In 2022, they were honoured to support Fun Lovin' Criminals on their European tour. In the summer of 2023, they toured the U.S.A. in their own right from New York, NY to Denver, CO.
