Course Description
Do you have an item of clothing that you can’t seem to take off for sentimental reasons or because it’s just such a good, flattering fit?
This course will teach you different techniques to take patterns from your favourite clothes without having to unpick the original.
You’ll have the opportunity to combine sewing skills with pattern cutting to complete a garment to your own size and measurements.
You’ll be introduced to the techniques through group demonstrations, handling samples, paper-based instructions and one-to-one feedback.
If you’ve existing basic sewing skills and would like to develop your understanding of garment construction further, then this is the course for you.
During the course you will:
- Explore the anatomy of your chosen garments
- Understand the tools used in pattern cutting
- Watch useful demonstrations of copying a pattern
- Draft your own patterns
- Make a basic toile
- Complete a fitting and alter your pattern accordingly
- Construct your garment to a high finish.
What will I gain?
You’ll leave this course with at least one finished, professional-level garment that is identical to the original, plus one or more calico toiles so you can continue to make clothes at home with different fabrics.
You’ll also have a deeper understanding of pattern cutting tools, lay-planning, grainlines and the making process from start to finish (including overlocking, fitting and finishing).
Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Entry requirement: You should have already made a few basic garments, feel confident using a sewing machine and be able to work from a simple commercial paper pattern.
Where you’ll learn: You will be based in the Bonington building at the City Campus, our dedicated art and design hub.
You will have access to an excellent range of facilities and equipment in the fashion studios, with industry-standard pattern cutting tables, professional mannequins and garment production machinery from domestic sewing machines to overlockers and button-hole machinery.
You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.
